MALACCA: Malacca Governor Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob has expressed satisfaction over progress made by the state towards realising its decade-long effort to achieve developed status.

Though lacking in natural resources, he said Malacca had succeeded in transforming itself in the industrial, manufacturing, service, tourism, agriculture and education sectors.

“Many guests and visitors are impressed when they see how Malacca has advanced. God willing, we will achieve developed status by 2010, as was planned 10 years ago by the state government,” he said during the investiture ceremony held at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, to mark his 71st birthday celebrations yesterday.

Mohd Khalil said the state had achieved 5.2% growth last year compared to the national average of 4.2%.

He also said the history of Malacca should be preserved in view of its unique heritage.

Meanwhile, the appearance of local diva Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Idris at the ceremony caught many by surprise.

She accompanied her husband Datuk Seri Khalid Mohamad Jiwa, or better known as Datuk K, who was among those bestowed with the title Jaksa Pendamai.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Agriculture and Agro-Based Industries Minister Datuk Noh Omar and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili headed the honours list when they received the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka (DGSM) award, which carries the title Datuk Seri.

A total of 298 awards were conferred out of the 1,230 yesterday. The remaining 932 awards are to be presented today and on another date to be fixed later.
