SERI KEMBANGAN: Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has refused to be drawn into speculation that he is tipped to be the next MCA president.
“Anyone can lead the party. Every- body can play a role to lead the party,” said the party vice-president. “We shouldn’t discuss this at all now. We cannot take things for granted.”
Speaking to reporters after opening the International Nursing Con- ference here yesterday, he said: “Let us not speculate or comment on who the new president is. The central committee will make a clear decision on this at the meeting on Oct 15.”
He said the stability and unity of the party were most important now as the Chinese community wanted to see a stable MCA. Liow said MCA was not in a state of deadlock as existing issues could be resolved based on the party constitution.
He said the 60-year-old party would be even stronger than it was. “But give us some time to settle the current issues.”
Liow said the central committee would analyse the EGM results and the direction the party would take. “It is important for the central committee to be united and ensure the unity of the whole party. We should be using consensus to strengthen the party,” he said. “We can’t afford a split.”
