Former veep Fong hints at making a comeback

KUALA LUMPUR: Former MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn has hinted about returning to the party leadership.

“Any of the central delegates is qualified to nominate himself for any of the posts,” he said when asked if he would offer himself if there was a fresh party election.

Dr Fong said “the best way is to give the 2,380 delegates a chance to offer themselves.”

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Dr Fong said MCA should call for a fresh election quickly in view of the outcome of Saturday’s extraordinary general meeting.

Urging new election: Fong speaking during the press conference, in which he said the election would enable the MCA to bounce back.

Dr Fong said the election would enable the MCA to bounce back and stay united, besides generating greater support.

“Our only wish is to see a new set of leadership that really has the support of all sides; a new leadership which can unite the party and bring back the Chinese support for the Barisan Nasional.”

He urged party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat to honour his word to quit and take the necessary action for a smooth transition of a new leadership.

“The president has said on numerous occasions that the presidential council members must go if any of the resolutions is passed as it is a collective decision,” said Fong.

“None of the presidential members has denied it,” he said.

“The day before the EGM, the central committee members called for a press conference and took a collective stand.

“They spoke as one.”
