PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Rak-yat must go back to the drawing board and address the many issues plaguing the coalition following its loss in the Bagan Pinang by-election, says DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.
He said the loss suffered by the Opposition in Sunday’s by-election destroyed the notion that Pakatan was on an invincible path to victory in the next federal and state general elections.
Lim said there were several issues “bedevilling” the Pakatan that were swept under the carpet and there were serious public concerns about the coalition’s unity, discipline, cohesion and sustainability.
“For a start, Pakatan leaders must stop being shy about the need to demonstrate discipline and common sense of purpose at all levels in the coalition,” he said in his blog yesterday.
Lim added that the leaders should also have the courage to admit and resolve any lack in confidence that undermined public support for Pakatan.
He said Barisan Nasional candidate Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad’s victory was not unexpected.
“However, Isa’s win, despite his record of money politics, sent a clear message that Umno could not be redeemed to play a meaningful role in ridding the country of corruption,” he added.
PAS central committee member Dr Lo’ Lo’ Mohd Ghazali, in a HarakahDaily.Net report, said she regreted the voters’ choice.
“That is very unfortunate,” she said, when commenting on Isa who defeated his PAS rival with a 5,435-vote majority.
However, Dr Lo’ Lo’ believed the results did not represent the aspirations of the entire Malaysian society.
“We still believe that most Malaysians would reject corruption for the sake of maintaining the country’s dignity.”
