5km fun walk to mark World Diabetes Day

What say you on the issue below?

WORLD Diabetes Day, which falls on Nov 14, is observed globally with the aim of increasing awareness of diabetes.

To mark the event, campaigns, activities, screenings, lectures and meetings, among other efforts, are held to spread the message about diabetes.

In conjunction with the upcoming World Diabetes Day, non-profit organisation Sau Seng Lam (SSL) Diabetes Care Centre will be organising the SSL Diabetes Walk 2009 on Nov 8.

The 5km fun walk will be flagged off at 7am at the Sau Seng Lam Dialysis and Stroke Rehabilitation Centre in Puchong, Selangor, and is expected to attract more than 800 caring Malaysians and their families.

This year, IJM Corporation Berhad (IJM) is teaming up with the SSL Diabetes Care Centre to commemorate World Diabetes Day by creating awareness of diabetes, its complications and the importance of its early prevention screening, and the SSL Diabetes Walk is a major event in IJM’s calendar of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

A cheque presentation ceremony was recently held in Wisma IJM in Petaling Jaya. Present at the event was IJM Group deputy chief executive officer and deputy managing director Teh Kean Ming, while SSL was represented by its vice-president, Wong Peng Wah. Also present was Persatuan Diabetis Malaysia secretary-general K.S. Maniam.

In conjunction with the sponsorship and the cheque presentation ceremony, SSL Diabetes Educator Adeline Tay gave a special presentation entitled Diabetes: Are You at Risk to the IJM staff.

IJM believes that CSR is not solely the responsibility of the company, so while it makes a donation or sponsors an event, its staff are encouraged to play a role in supporting the cause.

To this end, all its staff are encouraged to participate in the walk and donate their time to make the event a success.

Members of the public are invited to participate in the SSL Diabetes Walk 2009 as well as the activities planned for Nov 8 in Puchong.

The registration fee for the walk is RM15 and all participants will receive a gift bag and certificate of participation.
