KUALA LUMPUR: Going to art class once a week paid off for 12-year-old Lum Ya Woon, who won the first prize in Category B of the Kuntum-McDonald’s Colouring Competition held at the National Art Gallery yesterday.

Ironically, art is not even Lum’s favourite subject.

“My favourite subject is actually mathematics. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the (prize) money so I think I’ll give it to my mother,” said the student of SJK(C) Chong Hwa in Setapak, who won RM400 for her efforts.

The second and third place in the category were Aiman Hakim, 12, and Tayshya Lakshmanan, 12, both from the SK Puchong Indah.

Fourth placed Yeo Yi Jin, 12, was from SK Taman Bukit Maluri while 10-year-old Regina Joseph of SJK (T) Vivekananda in Brickfields walked away with the fifth prize.

Clinching first prize for Category A of the competition and the RM400 prize money was Lizatul Aisah Azman from SK Subang, while SJK(C) Jinjang Utara’s Wong Chooi Yie and SJK(C) Chong Hwa’s Anna Lim Hiu Tung, all nine, came second and third respectively.

Tan Xuan Yin, seven, of SJK(C) Kepong 2 won fourth prize while Tharany Selvaraju, nine, of SJK(T) Vivekananda in Brickfields clinched fifth prize.

All 10 winners also received McDonald’s vouchers.

A total of 1,600 children competed in both categories. Category A was for children aged between seven and nine, while Category B was for those aged between 10 and 12.

Salesperson Tiew Tok Wong, 38, said he and three of his children woke up at 6am to drive all the way from Klang to register for the competition.

“My children weren’t here to win but just to have some fun. I didn’t really expect them to win either, especially after seeing some of the other children’s works.

“Some of them are really good,” said Tiew.

Another two competitions will be held – at Mawanita in Johor Baru on Nov 7 and in Penang in March.

Registration forms are available in Kuntum magazine, but walk-in registrations are also welcome.
