Uplifting rendition from girl with Down Syndrome

What say you on the issue below?

IPOH: Foo Hui Yuan may have Down Syndrome but it did not stop her from lifting the mood of the audience with an almost perfect redition of a Teresa Teng classic.

The gritty 21-year-old, who sang The Moon Represents My Heart at the opening of the new building of her alma mater Sekolah Semangat Maju here yesterday, took eight years to learn the song.

Among those in the audience were the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah and Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Bainun.

Heartfelt rendition: Foo singing Teresa Teng’s classic, The Moon Represents My Heart during the opening of the Sekolah Semangat Maju’s new building in Ipoh Saturday.

Hui Yuan’s father Foo Kok Keng, 60, said his youngest daughter caught the singing bug from him and his wife.

“We are both avid singers,” he said, adding that Hui Yuan also likes to dance.

Foo said they had difficulty teaching Hui Yuan to sing the song because of the condition of her tongue, which made it difficult for her to pronounce words.

“But she persevered and sings the song perfectly now,” said the proud father.

Foo, who is also a committee member at the school, said he proposed Hui Yuan’s performance upon learning that there would be an opening ceremony.

“She likes to perform in front of the people,” he said.

Hui Yuan, in her white dress with flowers, said she felt happy that she was able to perform the entire song in front of the Sultan and the Raja Permaisuri.

“I trained very hard for it,” said the former student of the school, who graduated three years ago and now helps out at her father’s camera shop.
