Unand students prefer to stay home

What say you on the issue below?

SERDANG: The majority of the 330 students from Universitas Andalas (Unand) in Padang, Indonesia, would prefer to continue their studies in Malaysia.

They were flown home after the recent earthquake in West Sumatra.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the students were free to select their institutions of choice and would be given help on credit transfer and equivalency.

He said the students made known their preference at a closed-door meeting at the Universiti Putra Malaysia yesterday morning.

“In the meeting they were given the latest information on Unand and what they needed to consider before making any decision,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Khaled said the ministry had felt that the final-year and clinical-level students should have no problems resuming their studies in Indonesia.

However, the students had a different view.

He said that whatever the decision, the ministry was prepared to be the facilitator, adding that it could also provide the students with a maximum loan of RM150,000.
