TEMERLOH: A technician jailed 20 years for killing his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend broke down in the dock after apologising to the victim’s family members.
However, the girl’s relatives refused to accept his apology and instead one of them punched the accused when he was being led out of the court.
The police and those who were nearby had to restrain the man from further assaulting Tan Guo Rong , 23, who was jailed for committing culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Earlier in the court, Tan said “I am sorry. Please forgive me (in Chinese)” thrice to victim Chua Li Yian’s family members..
The accused then cried openly before the court stood down after he was sentenced by Justice Akhtar Tahir to serve a 20-year jail term from the date of arrest on May 9.
Later the victim’s father Chua Yunn Jiang, 43, expressed his unhappiness over the 20-year jail term and refused to accept Tan’s apologies. In his judgment, Justice Akhtar said the court was of the opinion that the accused had not regretted his action as it took him eight days to retrieve the remains of the deceased.
“His guilty plea has saved the court’s time but the offence is a very serious one, hence the court could not pass a lenient sentence.
“The bright future of a young girl is ruined by you and she will never have the opportunity to live it out,” he said, before asking the accused if he had anything to say to the deceased’s family.
The accused, initially charged for the murder of the Form Five student, had pleaded guilty to a lesser charge under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code. Tan was said to have caused the death of Chua, between 6.30pm on May 1 and 3.05am on May 9 this year, along Jalan Industri 2, near the U-One Entertainment centre, Mentakab industrial estate, near here.
Earlier, at the outset of the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Najmi Daud pressed for a heavy sentence as the crime committed was very grave.
