What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations into Pempena Sdn Bhd, a controversial subsidiary of the Tourism Ministry, is being finalised, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She gave an assurance that thorough investigations would be conducted on Pempena which was believed to be involved in bad investments, criminal breach of trust and financial improprieties amounting to more than RM50mil.

“Definitely, Pempena is an issue that we will not just put aside. A special committee has been set up to investigate the issue,” she told reporters after the launch of KL Sunday 1Malaysia Family Fair at the Malaysian Tourism Information Centre here yesterday.

She was asked on the status of Pempena, which was under investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police.

She said the MACC and police were investigating the irregularities in the investments and ventures that Pempena had undertaken with various companies following reports lodged in 2008 and this year.

Delighted: Dr Ng launching the KL Sunday 1Malaysia Family Fair at the Malaysian Tourism Information Centre in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The MACC was investigating claims that former Tourism Minister Datuk Azalina Othman had hired 20 employees in Pempena although government regulations allowed a minister to employ only eight people.

The MACC probe focused on Pempena and its affiliates – Malaysian Travel Business Sdn Bhd and SD Corp Communications Sdn Bhd which had excessive staff on their payroll.
