PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has clarified that 18 types of dried plum and prune from China, Taiwan and other Asian countries that were found to contain high levels of lead by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were not banned from being imported.
The clarification was made following media reports that the products were banned on Oct 9.
“The ministry is taking action by placing the products at Level Five inspection of Detain, Test and Release in the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia at all the country’s entry points,” Food Safety and Quality Division director Noraini Mohd Othman said in a statement here yesterday.
Samples of the products would be taken for analysis to determine levels of lead before they were allowed into the country.
On Thursday, it was reported that the sale of 18 types of dried plum and prune had been restricted by the ministry after high degrees of lead levels up to 30ppm were detected.
The Food Safety and Quality Division of the ministry said consumers need not worry as appropiate steps were being taken to address the matter.
