FOR a second time, Kuala Lumpur Tower (Menara KL) will be hosting the Deepavali Fiesta 2009.
Held to inform and educate tourists about the festival of lights, the event is organised by MI Fest Management, Putera MIC and KL Tower.
“This is a very good place to organise the event as many tourists from all over the world visit the tower,” S. Padmarajah, the organiser, said.
He said they had two kolams at the entrance and one on the first floor to welcome visitors to the world famous site.
“Kolams are a significant aspect of Indian culture and they serve to invite everyone into our homes, including ants and other beings,” he said.
There are many types of kolam including ones painted with rice powder and the rangoli kolam which is made from colourful rice grains.
The rice powder is said to invite birds and other small creatures to eat it, thus inviting other beings into one’s home and everyday life.
It is also a sign of invitation to welcome the Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity.
There will also be stalls set up selling sweets and mehendi (henna) drawing for those interested in sampling Indian tradition and sweets.
The entire place will also have decorations to ensure the Deepavali warmth and celebration is felt by everyone.
According to Padmarajah, all employees have been trained to answer questions from tourists about the festivals and the decorations.
The fiesta was launced by Datin Seri Indrani Samy Vellu, the wife of MIC President Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, on Oct 9.
Many tourists gathered to watch the launch and later joined the crowd to witness a bharatanatyam performance.
Padmarajah also said they planned to expand the event to other places, including Chennai in India.
“We have a strong group of Putera MIC members in Chennai who are an enthusiastic lot and enjoy having celebrations like these,” he said.
The stalls will be open till Oct 16.
