SERDANG: The Higher Education Ministry will find universities in other countries to send Malaysians to study if institutions of higher learning in Indonesia refuse to accept them.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the matter should be given attention to by sponsors like Mara, the Public Service Department (PSD) and education foundations.

“The main sponsors like PSD, Mara and the education foundations should take this into account when they want to send their students. The ministry is willing to find other countries for Malaysian students,” he told reporters at a function at Universiti Putra Malaysia here yesterday.

He was commenting on a claim by the vice-chancellor of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Noh Dalimin that there were a few universities in Indonesia which wanted to stop accepting Malaysian students following various issues raised by certain parties in the republic.

However, he said, Universiti Andalas in quake-hit Padang was not influenced by the anti-Malaysia sentiment and would continue to accept Malaysian students.

Mohamed Khaled also said the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia should issue guidelines to be implemented by the Malaysian Students Department there. This was to ensure the safety of Malaysian students in the republic.

Meanwhile, scores of quake victims mobbed the Malaysian humanitarian aid mission yesterday morning, as food and medicines were distributed in Kampung Kasiak Putih, Pariaman Utara.

The mission gave away two tonnes of food, drinks, medicines and blankets to the 100-odd residents at about 10am. It comprises two doctors from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital, an eightman search and rescue team and the Armed Forces personnel.

Mission head Sophian Isswandy Ismail said the victims were forced to sleep in makeshift tents as their houses were badly damaged by the earthquake.

He said that besides being afflicted by skin ailments, the victims especially children, suffered from fever, sore throat and cough.
