Father blames daughter’s death on ‘slow’ firemen

What say you on the issue below?

JOHOR BARU: The father of college student Ho Whui Ling, who was killed in a pre-dawn fire at her home on Friday, claimed that the firemen were too slow to respond to their alert call.

Retiree Ho Nee Lia, 60, said his daughter was still screaming for help when the fire engines arrived at their house.

“If only they had reacted a bit faster my daughter could have been saved. We heard her screams for help.

“My son tried to enter the house to save his sister but we prevented him as the fire had engulfed the living room area, making it difficult to go upstairs,” he said.

Ho said he was also unhappy with the different versions provided by the firemen, with one of them telling him that his daughter was in a weak condition and another saying that she had been killed.

He said they were a close-knit family and Whui Ling, who had been working part-time at a factory in Singapore to help out the family, was off the day the fire happened at their home in Skudai.

Ho also alleged that some of the family jewellery had gone missing.

Skudai assemblyman Dr Boo Cheng Hau, who was at Whui Ling’s wake at the Tiong Hua Memorial Park, desc-ribed the allegations against the Fire and Rescue Department as serious.

“The department must conduct an inquiry to find out what actually happened,” he said, urging eye-witnesses to lodge police reports.

State Fire and Rescue Department director Ab Ghani Daud said a special team, comprising officers from the department’s headquarters in Putra-jaya, was investigating the matter.

“All the 17 firemen involved in putting out that fire will be questioned as to whether the procedures were adhered to during the operation.

“Let’s wait for the outcome of the investigations,” he said.
