ROMPIN: Some 200,000 Malaysians who have opted to become citizens of America should be offered permanent residents status by the Malaysian Government for their financial contribution to their families back home.
Malaysian ambassador to Washington Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis said these professionals serving as lawyers, lecturers and in many other fields sent money home and the amount was estimated to touch US$2bil (RM7bil) annually.
Dr Jamaluddin said they stayed on in the United States and decided to work for higher income after completing their studies.
“They told me that Malaysia is still their country and not their second home,” Dr Jamaluddin said after hosting the Hari Raya open house at his residence in Pinggir Pelangir, Muadzam Shah, on Sunday.
Also present were Yang di-Pertua Negri of Malacca Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob, Muadzam Shah assemblyman Datuk Maznah Mazlan and former Pahang deputy mentri besar Datuk Hasan Arifin.
Dr Jamaluddin said he would meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen soon to discuss the matter.
Dr Jamaluddin added that they still loved Malaysia and would come back when they retire.
“All they want is that they are not treated as foreigners in this country.
“They still want their rights here,” said Dr Jamaluddin.
