KUALA LUMPUR: If social media is a barometer for the frontrunner in FIFA's 2016 Puskas Awards, Penang striker Mohd Faiz Subri's wonder goal must be a shoo-in for the trophy.
A video clip of his "physics-defying" goal, uploaded by FIFA on its YouTube channel, has almost half a million more views than footage of the second-placed goal.
As of 5.15pm Friday, Mohd Faiz's clip has amassed 1,373,249 views, leaving even spectacular goals scored by Barcelona superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar trailing in its wake.
The video with the second-highest number of views, a Messi free-kick, has 905,290 views, while a scissors kick by Corinthians (Brasil) player Johnath Marlone in third spot has 902,643 views.
Other candidates in the running are Mario Gaspar (Villareal/Spain), Hlompho Kekana (Mamelodi Sundowns/South Africa), Saul Niguez (Atletico Madrid/Spain), Hal Robson-Kanu (West Bromwich Albion/Wales), Simon Skrabb (Gefle IF/Finland) and Daniuska Rodrigue (Venezuela).
FIFA on Nov 19 had shortlisted 10 spectacular goals scored from Sept 30, 2015 till Sept 30, 2016 for the FIFA Puskas Awards for voting on its website.
The top three goals with most votes will go through a second round of voting and the winners will be announced in Zurich, Switzerland on Jan 9.
Football fans can still vote for Mohd Faiz on the FIFA website.
Voting closes today.
