RESIDENTS in Taman Bukit Indah, Ampang, can now rest easy as the leaning iron railing near a 4m-deep monsoon drain has been repaired after several years.
Last week, Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) hired a contractor to do the job.
Pertubuhan Warga Istimewa Malaysia deputy president S.M Kamarrudin said the residents were happy that the council had solved their woes.
Kamaruddin and Ampang Gerakan deputy chairman Husain Buhaudin, a former MPAJ councillor, brought the matter to the attention of the council about two months ago.
“If the railing was not repaired, accidents could have occurred,” Kamaruddin said.
The railing near a row of shophouses in Medan Bukit Indah has been in that condition for several years.
A resident, Siti Eshah, said she had witnessed cars getting stuck after going off the road near the monsoon drain.
“Can you imagine what would have happened if drivers reversing their vehicles knock into the railing?” she asked.
“Fortunately there have not been any major accidents,” she added.
Stationery shop owner Jalil Hanifah, who has been operating in the area for nine years, said the railing foundation needed to be strengthened.
Kamaruddin urged the council not to restrict their duties to trimming grass and trees only.
“There are many areas in Bukit Indah where the roads, culverts and drains are in a bad condition.
“They should be attending to these problems and not just go around issuing summonses and collecting assessment rates,” he said.
