THE German Speaking Society Kuala Lumpur (GSSKL) committee launched their main fundraising event of the year — The Austrian-German-Swiss Charity Bazaar 2011 recently.
This year’s event will be held tomorrow at the “Carcosa Seri Negara” from 11am to 3pm.
“Our success in raising funds in this annual event is due mainly to the generosity and co-operation of our sponsors who have always been most forthcoming in their support of such a deserving cause”, said GSSKL President Selma Kriegner.
From its humble beginning at the German ambassador’s residence in 1986, the AGS Charity Bazaar has grown into a grand event.
The bazaar is popular as it also leads up to the Christmas season.
Last year, nearly 1,000 visitors from the expatriate and local community had the opportunity to take home a variety of typical European Christmas handicraft items and decorations, homemade biscuits, marmelades, sweets and traditional cakes.
This year, other than the wide variety of European Christmas items and lucky draws, the GSSKL has also invited the children’s choir and a violinist from the German School of Kuala Lumpur to make the AGS Charity Bazaar livelier.
Volunteers from the Austrian, Swiss and German communities work throughout the whole year in preparation for the bazaar.
“There won’t be any commercial traders at this event,” said Kriegner.
Sale proceeds from the bazaar are distributed to selected local charities.
Volunteers from the GSSKL community visit these organisations on a regular basis to ensure that funds are appropriately distributed to those concerned.
