DJ Aanantha and Proton give away musical instruments to Tamil schools

What say you on the issue below?

AS part of the ‘Persona - Better, Undoubtedly’ campaign to raise confidence in children, Proton and DJ Aanantha from THR Raaga presented three selected Tamil schools with musical instruments to develop their music and art programme.

The three recipient schools — SJK (T) Vivekananda, Petaling Jaya, SJK (T) Nilai, Negri Sembilan and SJK (T) Melaka Kubu, Malacca — received the instruments based on the schools’ individual needs to help their students further pursue extra-curricular activities in music.

SJK (T) Vivekananda received keyboards, drum sets, trumpets and various other instruments which will be used to create a percussion band for 67 students. The instruments were presented to the school by DJ Aanantha and Proton Edar Marketing Division general manager Sidik Abdul Hamid during a special get-together session held with 200 students from the school.

“We believe that music and art are important to develop a child’s confidence, and confidence is the foundation of a child’s well-being and the key to success as an adult. This is why we want to play a part in helping these schools build their music and art segment,” said Sidik.

“Having a school band has been our school’s dream for some time now, which is why receiving the Proton-sponsored instruments is literally music to our ears.

“The teachers and students are very excited and we can hardly wait to start practising and developing the band. I personally believe that skills such as teamwork, leadership and public speaking cannot be learned solely from textbook, but from various other activities such as sports, arts and music,” said SJK (T) Vivekananda headmaster Bala Mohan.

The other two schools, SJK (T) Nilai and SJK (T) Melaka Kubu received 10 pieces of urumee and 10 pieces of tabla, and 1 uremee melam set, four guitars and 40 flutes, respectively.

According to SJK (T) Melaka Kubu headmaster A. Aloysius Xavier, the lack of classical instruments in the school prevented some of their talented students to participate in contests.

“We hope the children can now be exposed to the importance of learning beyond text books,” he said.

The instruments were purchased using the fund collected from the sale of DJ Aanantha’s music video titled Thannambikkai, which means confidence.

Approximately RM30,000 were collected from the sale which kicked off in the first week of October. Written by DJ Aanantha, and featuring three selected children, the music video was developed under the ‘Persona - Better, Undoubtedly’ campaign to inspire confidence in children via an upbeat tune and feel-good lyrics.

Three children were featured in the music video — Narresh Meganathan, 10, Suriya Prakash, 11, and Vishnupriya Tiyagaraja, 9 — and they were handpicked from 21 students who participated in the ‘Persona - Talent Workshop’ hosted by DJ Aanantha and The Actors Studio Academy held in Kuala Lumpur in June. All three children were also from the selected schools.

“It is our sincere hope that Narresh, Suriya, and Vishnupriya’s experiences and confidence will inspire the other students in their schools,” said Sidik.
