THE audience at Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Jazz Band 15th Annual Concert 2011 had the time of their lives as they were taken on a journey back in time with retro jazz hits.

The jazz band, performing its annual concert for the 15th time since its formation in 1997, put an unusual retro twist to the concert which had the crowd enthralled throughout the two-hour performance.

The band pleased the crowd with hits such as Love Machine, Unforgettable, Fever, Rindu Bayangan, and Tian Mi Mi.

During the break, a special Bharatanatyam Indian Classical Dance was performed by Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Mohamed Ghouse Nasuruddin.

Spotted in the crowd was USM student Loo Yee Xuan, 21, and his friend V. Huganeswaran, 28.

“The concert was really fun. The jazz band performed really well and was very professional,” said Lee.

“I was surprised that there was a Bharatanatyam performance in a jazz concert. It was something unique and very interesting,” said Huganeswaran.

USM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Omar Osman said the jazz band had been doing recitals and performances inside and outside the university consistently.

“The concert this year caught me by surprise when they went retro. It is a great repertoire of familiar songs with a touch of jazz,” he added.
