THE Victorian State Government via its Business Office (VGBO) hosted a Business Insights Luncheon recently.

The event was part of its initiative to connect and foster stronger relationships among its alumni members in Malaysia.

Attended by almost 100 members, the inaugural event was launched by Victoria governor Alex Chernov who said that Victoria’s strong links with Malaysia was in the international education sector.

“There are 22,000 Malaysian students in Australia currently and 8,000 of that number are in Victoria. Many return home upon completion of their studies but the strong bonds with Australia remains,” he said, adding that University of Melbourne itself has over 6,000 alumni here.

To promote business networking in key industries, University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society (IBES) executive director Dr Kate Cornick was invited to present a keynote speech.

Dr Cornick, who is also the winner of the Young Achiever prize in Australia’s leading communication awards this year, presented new breakthrough ideas in broadband applications through her work at IBES.

Attendees at the event include industry luminaries such as Sunway Group exco Puan Sri Susan Cheah, HELP University College president Datuk Dr Paul Chan as well as Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Miles Kupa.

Guests were also encouraged to join the online business group on Linked In called The Victorian Connection, that serves as a platform for connecting people interested in Victoria.
