THE dark clouds did not discourage Perakians from turning up for the Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebration high-tea in Ipoh recently.
The Jamuan Rakyat, organised by the state government, was a big hit with the people as they arrived at the Dataran Ipoh by the hundreds.
Young and old were delighted by the sumptuous spread served and they tucked into the different types of kuih, popiah and fried bee hoon while enjoying performances by members of Soka Gakkai Malaysia and state cultural troupe Selendang Perak.
Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah and Raja DiHilir Perak Raja Jaafar Raja Muda Musa graced the occasion.
In his welcoming speech, Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said such events were a perfect bridge to connect people from all strata of society.
He also advised the younger generation to be thankful for the peace and stability in the country and not to take them for granted.
Raja Nazrin later presented contribution to six former- soldiers and two former policemen who were injured while fighting the communists.
The Regent also gave out prizes to winners of the ‘Pertandingan Keceriaan Bulan Kemerdekaan”.
Among the winners were the Taiping Hospital (government building category) and SMK Datuk Ahmad, Lenggong (school category).
Winners of the march-past held earlier in the morning during the state-level Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day parade were Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Ipoh (school band category), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (higher learning institution category), and the Ipoh City Council (government organisation category).
