THE Selangor government will take over garbage collection services on Oct 15, ahead of the planned Jan 1 deadline.
Selangor local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said he received a letter from Alam Flora informing the state that they could take over the services earlier.
“We’re all prepared for it,” said Liu after giving out food items to poor residents at the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Hari Raya open house at the Kelana Jaya Stadium recently.
Liu had earlier announced that the state would take over the waste management services in Selangor on Jan 1.
The state had already taken over the cleaning and maintenance services from Alam Flora in August. Liu said taking over both services would save the 12 local councils a total of RM100mil a year from the RM400mil spent previously for garbage collection and cleaning services.
Twelve stalls were set up with a variety of food at the stadium.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said employees from the various MBPJ departments prepared some of the food.
The council also gave out certificates and prizes to the winners of the Ramadan Bazaar Awards.
A total of 75 winners were picked from the Ramadan bazaars in the city in categories like Most Reasonable Price, Cleanest Stall, Most Creative Advertising and Most Sustainable Practices.
Besides the MBPJ councillors, some of the other guests who attended the open house included Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, Petaling Jaya Selatan MP Hee Loy Sian, Kelana Jaya MP Loh Gwo-Burne and Seri Setia assemblyman Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.
