Stylo makes way to London

What say you on the issue below?

Malaysia’s biggest fashion festival Stylo wowed Londoners on Monday night when it previewed its Stylo-lympics during the London Fashion Week with creations made of recycled waste.

Celebrity haunt and private club Home House in Portman Square served as a secret venue for the Malaysians who brought in more than 100kg of waste from Kuala Lumpur to present The 7 Deadly Sins: Recycling is the new Black to the London’s fashion community.

Shoe legend Datuk Jimmy Choo was the guest of honour at the star-studded affair which highlighted emerging talents from both London and Kuala Lumpur.

London-based Korean designer Ara Jo, whose clients include Lady Gaga and Leona Lewis, was featured alongside Mercedes-Benz Stylo emerging designers Alexis Saw and Gerald Chia.

However, the designer who stole the show was 22-year-old Lorenzo Peh, this year’s Mercedes-Benz Stylo Emerging Designer of the Year with his ensemble made of tin cans, old newspapers and recycled car tyres.

The event is Stylo’s first preview to the main event to be held at the closing evening of the 2012 London Olympics.

Stylo International president and chief executive officer Datuk Nancy Yeoh said they planned to bring more Malaysian creative talents to London during the next 12 months.

“If the world hasn’t come to us, we should go to them and the best time is during the Olympics,” added Yeoh.

Choo said he told Nancy that London was anything but easy.

“When she called me to say she was going ahead anyway, I flew back from Kuala Lumpur to support her. It is not often that we see a Malaysian attempt something like this in their private capacity on such a scale in London. It was a bold move and I am so proud that she did it,” he said.

Hair designer Faevien Yee of A Cut Above flew in from New York to supervise the hair presentation.

“I am so happy for us in the Malaysian fashion industry to see that Stylo came into London in such a big way. Prestigious location, breath-taking building and amazing guests list. I am honoured to have been a part of all this,” Yee said.

Stylo also launched its international office, Stylo Worldwide. It moved its base from Singapore to London early this month. Besides hosting international events, the company established an international investor-relations arm using its PR company, RAPR Mileage which will strategise and advise US and European companies seeking business opportunities in Malaysia and parts of Asia.

The glitzy event was the preview of its 2012 STYLO-lympics Gala scheduled to take place during the 2012 Olympics season in London.
