MALACCA: Hundreds of Mat Rempit and pillion riders saw the brakes slammed on them when police and Road Transport Department (JPJ) officials surrounded them during their illegal race.
Upon seeing the authorities, many tried to escape. Some even abandoned their motorcycles in the middle of the road.
Most of them, however, were caught. Several managed to escape after ditching their machines near a padi field along the AMJ Highway near Bukit Piatu and Semabok.
More than 330 motorcycles were examined during the 1am operation yesterday, with 17 machines seized for various offences.
Melaka Tengah traffic enforcement officer Chief Insp Shaharuddin Md Nor said the operation involved 10 men from the Bukit Aman traffic branch, assisted by 50 from Malacca headquarters, 20 each from Johor and Negri Sembilan and four each from Terengganu and Kelantan police.
About 10 officers from the state JPJ also took part in the operation.
Police issued 11 arrest warrants for illegal racing.
The police and JPJ also issued 51 and 38 summonses, respectively, for various offences, including driving without a licence, expired licences and illegal modification.
Police also detained a man who tested positive for drugs, he added.
