Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the four robbers, believed to be foreigners, were linked to 18 burglaries in Ipoh, Batu Gajah, Sungai Siput, Manjung and Perak Tengah.
"We are now trying to trace the remaining gang members," Shukri said.
The horrifying drama began at 9.30pm when policemen on patrol at the town centre spotted four men behaving suspiciously in a silver Proton Waja.
"The policemen ordered the suspects to stop for inspection but, they ignored and fled, resulting in a 20-minute chase. The suspects were cornered near the Pengkalan Light Industrial Area when they drove into a dead end. The four suspects dashed out of the car wielding parang and several shots rang out."
The policemen returned fire, killing all four suspects on the spot.
Police also found RM8,000 worth of stolen goods in the car including two laptops, three mobile phones, RM1,820, costume jewellery and several branded watches.
