KUALA LUMPUR: A 20-year-old International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) student has drowned in the Gombak campus swimming pool.
Mohd Hafifi Hazwan Mohd Adnan had gone for a swim early yesterday morning with four friends after a game of futsal near the campus grounds.
The body of Mohd Hafifi, who could not swim, was discovered at about 3am.
His close friend Muhamad Izad Yusof, 20, said he had accompanied Mohd Hafifi and three other friends to play futsal at about 1.30am after a group study session.
After their game, he said, they decided to go back to the campus on their motorcycles but Mohd Hafifi had sped off on his own.
“Just as we reached the campus we heard a voice shouting for help,” he said, adding that he and his friends immediately rushed to the pool where the shouts had come from.
However, they were unable to help Mohd Hafifi as it was dark and the pool was about two metres deep.
Mohd Hafifi’s mother, Norma Abdullah, when met at the university mosque, said she received a call from the management at about 3.30am, informing her of his death.
Mohd Hafifi’s remains will be buried at his village in Kampung Alor Lintah, Jerteh.
