EPU: Too early to decide if Govt will take over toll roads

What say you on the issue below?

BUTTERWORTH: The Economic Planning Unit (EPU) hopes to wrap up its study on the possibility of the Government taking over all toll roads in the country by December.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop (pic), who is in charge of the EPU, said the study was in the final stages now, but there were several issues in it that were complicated.

“It also has many implications, especially to the Government’s financial situation,” he said.

“The proposal might require the Government to fork out several billion ringgit. Therefore it needs to be studied thoroughly,” he added after presenting RM200,000 in Ramadan moreh (aid) to 200 Penang mosque committees at the Dewan Besar in Sungai Dua here yesterday.

He said any decision would primarily be based on the Government’s long-term financial capability to meet the required needs to sustain the service.

“It is still too early to say if the Government will take over the toll roads.”

Asked if the Government would consider appointing a government-linked company to oversee operations of the toll roa ds, Nor Mohamed said all options were being considered.

He stressed that the Government wanted to create a system that could provide comfort to the people without burdening them further.

“We have spoken to the leadership to get its feedback on our preliminary study results,” he said.

Asked about the response towards the proposal by the 22 toll concession holders, Nor Mohamed said they had so far cooperated by giving the necessary details that were required for the study.
