High price of garlic baffling

What say you on the issue below?

BALING: Consumers in Kedah are "shell-shocked" over the spiralling price of garlic sold at RM6 per kg at several districts.

A Bernama survey has revealed that in Sik and here, garlic is being sold at RM5 and RM6 respectively compared with its normal price of RM2. A wholesaler here, Abdul Razak Abdullah, 38, said that suppliers had raised the price, charging RM24 for a 6kg bag.

"We are thus, forced to sell garlic at a higher price than usual," he said, adding that previously the same bag of garlic was sold at RM6.

He said, many pasar malam traders here were shocked over the sudden price hike as the suppliers merely announced that the price had spiralled.

In Sik, trader Abdul Ghutus Mohd Bukhari believed that the price hike could have resulted from the belief that eating garlic could prevent one from contracting the influenza A (H1N1).
