KUALA LUMPUR: Royal Malaysian Air Force chief Gen Tan Sri Azizan Ariffin has been appointed the new armed forces chief
from Sept 1.
The appointment is historic as this is the first time that an RMAF chief is appointed to the post.
Azizan will replace Gen Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal, who will be retiring.
“Pending consent from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the AFC made the decision to appoint Azizan as the new armed forces chief,” he said after the presentation of Hari Raya contributions to the armed forces at the ministry here yesterday.
Ahmad Zahid also announced the appointment of Air Operations commander Lt Gen Datuk Rodzali Daud as the new RMAF chief, and Chief of Staff Lt-Gen Datuk Shahron Ibrahim as the new RMAF deputy chief.
He said Aziz, who had served the military for 40 years, would be taking his remaining leave of 61 days to and attend the compulsory transition course before fully retiring on Jan 31, 2010.
Aziz, who was born on Aug 26, 1951 in Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan, joined the army on April 23, 1969.
He had written a book, The Marksman, on the army management philosophy towards excellence.
Azizan, born on Oct 25, 1952, is from Yan, Kedah, and had been the RMAF chief since Oct 30, 2006.
Earlier, 59 organisations, welfare bodies and companies, including Bakti (TheWelfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers), Petronas, Sapura Group and Affin Bank Berhad handed over their Raya contributions to the armed forces.
Ahmad Zahid in his speech, said this year this year, the armed forces received Raya contributions in cash and kind worth RM1.1 million.
