Supporters confident EGM will be held

What say you on the issue below?

"I want to see the party stable and united and the only way we can resolve the leadership problem once and for all is to have an EGM."

Theng said response from grassroots had been very good and was confident of getting up to 1,000 signatures.

If the EGM goes through, the stage will be set for a repeat of a protracted battle reminiscent of the 2001 Team A-Team B fight.

At that time, Team A was led by then president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Team B was by former deputy Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek. Dr Chua was aligned to Team A while Ong was firmly in Team B's camp.

Dr Chua was sacked from MCA by the presidential council on Wednesday for tarnishing the party's image with his DVD sex scandal.

The presidential council decided to adopt its disciplinary panel's recommendation for the expulsion.

Dr Chua was caught on video having a tryst with a woman at a hotel in Johor in 2007.

He subsequently resigned from all government and party posts. He was elected as MCA's deputy president in the party polls last October.

Meanwhile, central delegates contacted by the New Straits Times said they had received phone calls from the organisers to help support their cause.

Pulai division chief Loh Teh Hian said Ong's actions lately had affected the image and credibility of the party.

"The sacking of Dr Chua was the last straw."

FT central delegate Hang Chin Pheng said delegates were unhappy with the way Dr Chua was treated by Ong.

"We feel that Ong does not respect our choice in voting in Dr Chua. It looks very personal to me."

Petaling Jaya Utara division adviser Wong Leong said grassroots were also unhappy with the way the members of the presidential council, who are also central committee members, behaved.

"They didn't even try to defend Dr Chua or give him a chance to defend himself. They had forgotten that they were elected by the central delegates to the CC. They should realise they represent the voice of the grassroots and not the voice of the president."
