RAMADAN is here again and as usual the Muslim womenfolk are busy adjusting their schedule, especially those who are working, to ensure they arrive home in time to cook for the breaking-of-the-fast meal at dusk.
With the ever present traffic jams, however, it is a wonder that anyone can actually get home on time and whip up food that their family likes.
But Malaysians, particulary those living in cities and the suburbs, are now adroitly avoiding the hassle. Instead of heading for home and the kitchen, they either set off for the nearest convenient food outlet or dial well-remembered numbers on their phones.
As they say, where there’s demand, there is bound to be supply, and so there are now many restaurants and fast food outlets catering to the crowd that want to break fast with the minimum amount of fuss.
A convenient alternative: Instead of heading for home, Muslims today can go to the nearest food outlet to break fast. Sunday Metro looks at some of these quick alternatives.
Subway
The Sub (that’s what sandwiches at Subway restaurants are called) offers a fresh and complete meal. For this month, the sub of the day (six-inch loaf), which is priced at RM7.50 each, comes with a 16oz drink free of charge.
The subs that come highly recommended are the “Red-Hot” Mondays with Italian B.M.T.; “Cheery” Tuesdays with Tuna; “Lively” Wednesdays with Meatball Marinara; “Fresh” Thursdays with Turkey Breast and Turkey Ham; “Cool” Fridays with Smoked Turkey; “Dreamy” Saturdays with Seafood & Crab; and “Magical” Sundays with Chicken Teriyaki.
McDonald’s
At McDonald’s, the popular McValue Lunch is also available between 6pm and 9pm during Ramadan. The McValue meals come with medium-sized French Fries and a medium-sized carbonated drink. This offer is available for drive-thru, dine-in and take away only.
McDelivery is also available but the prices of the sets are different and a RM3 charge will be applied for every delivery. Extra goodies are available for McDelivery via online coupons (which you can download from www.mcdonalds.com.my). With the coupons, you can redeem 20 pieces of chicken McNuggets with every RM39 or more in a single purchase. For purchases of RM30 and above, you can redeem a free Big Mac or nine pieces of chicken McNuggets.
An Oreo McFlurry will be given free for purchases of RM25 and above.
There is a new item on the menu – Big N’ Tasty, a quarter-pound beef patty with a slice of cheese, two juicy slices of tomato, fresh lettuce, pickles and slivered onions, garnished with a special sauce and ketchup on a toasted sesame bun. Sounds interesting?
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Missed the last packet of bubur lambuk at Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru? Then make a beeline for the nearest KFC and savour a bowl of bubur lambuk with two free dates thrown in for a mere RM1.50. This offer is available between 4pm and 8pm throughout Ramadan.
Don’t forget to try the new shrimp stix which is available à la carte at RM5.15, or in a set with two pieces of fried chicken and a rose syrup drink for only RM10.70.
For sahur, KFC has two sets available between 2am and 5.30am. They are the Kombo Sahur I, comprising a Nasi Lemak Enak Ayam and a carbonated drink for RM7.50; and the Kombo Sahur II, which has one set of the Nasi Lemak Enak Ayam, two pieces of fried chicken with coleslaw and two carbonated drinks for only RM15, making it ideal for two people.
Pizza Hut
Over the fasting month, Pizza Hut is offering Citarasa Ramadan sets comprising Calamansi juice, a chicken or beef Kebab Pilaf Rice, soup of the day and a special chicken pizza called Sinar Ramadan Pizza. For dine-in customers, there is a selection of two combos. The first, costing RM36.50 (pre-tax), is inclusive of a regular Sinar Ramadan Pizza, one Kebab Pilaf Rice (chicken or beef), two soups of the day and two limau kasturi juices. The second combo, which is just right for four, costs RM55.50 (pre-tax). It comprises a large Sinar Ramadan Pizza, one Kebab Pilaf Rice (chicken or beef), four soups of the day and four glasses of limau kasturi juice.
The calamansi juice, popularly known as limau kasturi juice, is made with green apple syrup, lime juice, asam boi and 7Up.
The Kebab Pilaf Rice is a dish of rice with corn and raisins, lamb kebab teamed with either chicken or beef sausage, a special masala sauce and a cucumber acar.
Tasty morsels of chicken and pineapple, mozzarella cheese, capsicum, onions and Thai sauce are the chief ingredients in the The Sinar Ramadan Pizza.

The Chicken Rice Shop
At The Chicken Rice Shop, four special combos have been specially created for those breaking their fast.
A special chicken kalio (chicken in coconut sauce) is included in the combo. If you are breaking fast alone, the Set Aneka A is just right for you. At RM16.99, you can feast on two pieces of chicken kalio, Ipoh bean sprouts, one bowl of rice, one bowl of the soup of the day and the outlet’s festive drink – soy pudina, which is soy milk with a mint flavour and heaped with strips of herbal jelly or cincau. The combo for two, Set Aneka B, is priced at RM38.99 but it comes at not only double the size of the first combo, but also includes pai tee, a choice of an additional serving of roasted, steamed or braised chicken and a regular Sai To fishball soup. The two other combos, Set Aneka C and Set Aneka D are at RM69.99 (for three to four pax) and RM99.99 (for five to six people) respectively.
Kenny Rogers ROASTERS
The special at Kenny Rogers ROASTERS (KRR) this Ramadan is Kenny’s Spicy BBQ Chicken Meal, which comes with a Quarter Rotisserie-roasted chicken in special spicy BBQ sauce, three side dishes of your choice and Kenny’s Home-made Muffin for RM 17.90 (pre-tax).
Nasi Lemak from AYS Sri Kulai They are also offering their ROASTERS Ramadhan Reservation (RRR) service, which means you don’t need to queue or fume in exasperation upon being told that a particular outlet is full. Guests can call or walk in to a KRR restaurant, confirm the dining time, order, and pay the bill to get a pre-assigned table number. At your requested time, a piping hot meal will be waiting for you.

AYS Sri Kulai
This isn’t a restaurant or fast food outlet but a manufacturer of microwaveable, halal, frozen ready-to-eat Malaysian meals that recently opened its concept store at Jaya One, Petaling Jaya. AYS products can also be ordered via its service hotline number 1300-133-118. Three value sets for two, three and four people respectively are available in a range that includes nasi lemak, chicken rice, sambal udang, and dim sum.
The meals are ready in five minutes from freezer to microwave to table.
Value Set 1 offers two complete meals, one dim sum set, two ice lemon tea or coffee and two packets of dates at RM18. Value Set 2, at RM32, comprises three complete meals, two dim sum sets, three ice lemon tea or coffee and three packets of dates. Value Set 3 costs RM46.
