Mat Rempit preying on women, old people

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: Callous and ruthless. This is an apt description for Mat Rempit snatch thieves who are now on the hunt for "raya money" by preying on women and senior citizens in the daytime.

The thieves are willing to go to any extent to get their victim's handbag even if it means she falls down and gets injured. In some cases, the victim does not even have any money in the handbag.

The latest theft occurred recently when a 53-year-old housewife was standing in front of a shopping centre in Jalan Ampang.

The housewife was approached by three men on two motorcycles at 6pm.

"One of the snatch thieves grabbed the victim's handbag and she fell down injuring her left knee," a police source told the New Sunday Times.

"The snatch thieves sped off without a second glance at their victim.

"She lost two mobile phones, cash and important documents worth a total of RM800," the source said.

The housewife immediately lodged a police report.

In a separate case, the sources said, a 25-year-old woman fell prey to two snatch thieves on a motorcycle while she was standing in front of a shopping centre in Jalan Ampang.

"The snatch theft occurred about 6.30pm and the woman did not realise she was being followed by two men on a motorcycle.

"They suddenly grabbed her handbag causing her to lose her balance."

The source said the woman, who works for a Korean airline company, injured her right hand.

In her police report, she said she lost her automated teller machine card and several important documents.

A third theft was reported by a trader who was set upon by two snatch thieves on a motorcycle as she was walking in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman recently.

In 8am incident, the 38-year-old woman was walking after getting down from a taxi.

She was unaware that two men on a motorcycle were following her from behind.

"The trader, who runs a restaurant, suddenly felt a strong tug on her handbag before it was gone.

"The woman lost RM1,300 in cash and valuables and lodged a report over the incident," the source said.

Another theft occurred last Friday when a 25-year-old woman lost almost RM2,000 when her bag which contained a laptop and a passport was snatched by thieves on a motorcycle.

In the 1.30pm incident, the woman was walking alone in front of a fast food outlet in Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock when she was approached by a man.

"The man grabbed the woman's bag and immediately ran towards another man who was waiting on a motorcycle," the source said.

"Both snatch thieves then sped off leaving the woman staring in shock as the incident took place in a crowded area.

"Investigations show that these snatch thieves are Mat Rempit who are looking for cash in preparation for next month's Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities.

"The police have increased patrols in these hot spots with the assistance of Rela and General Operations Force personnel.

"But the public must play their part by being more alert and sensitive to their surroundings," the source added.
