Husband and wife injured in fire at flat

ALOR STAR: A man and his wife were injured in a fire triggered by an explosion on the ground floor of a five-storey flat in Taman Setia Jaya yesterday.

Housewife Chuah Sooi Hoon, 60, sustained major burns on her face, body, hands and legs. Her husband, Chong Moh Kaw, 61, suffered minor burns.

Their neighbour Ong Phaik Choo, 44, who lives next door, sustained minor burns.

Jalan Tun Razak Fire and Rescue Department senior officer Mohd Noor Din, said the cause of the explosion at the two-bedroom unit had yet to be ascertained.

Ong had apparently gone to the couple's house to enquire about a smell coming from within.

Neighbours rushed the three victims to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital here.

Beh Lim Siam, 47, who was giving tuition in her second floor flat said she heard a loud explosion and called the Fire and Rescue Department.

Derga State assemblyman Dr Cheah Soon Hai who rushed to the scene, said he would donate RM500 to the couple.
