MUAR: The National Anti-Drug Agency service centre and Civil Defence Department, in a joint operation, nabbed a big culprit.
Only, it was no drug courier. It was a python that had been preying on their chicken for the past two years.
A resident of the service centre along Jalan Timbalan here, Syed Abdullah Syed Abu Bakar, was shocked to see the python inside a chicken coop behind the centre. He had gone to feed some 40 chickens and a pair of swans reared there when he spotted the snake at about 9am.
He then alerted the staff, including driver K. Nagarajah, and other residents before getting a snake-catching rod from the Civil Defence Department office next door.
Nagarajah said it was the seventh time that pythons had entered the area in the past two years. He believed they came from a nearby mangrove swamp.
He said monkeys and monitor lizards had also intruded into the chicken breeding area, attacking young chicks or stealing the eggs.
“We hope the authorities here will clear the bushes and undergrowth at the swimming pool complex and surrounding plots,” he added.
He said the chickens were bred by the residents undergoing rehabilitation programme to be sold for supplementary income.
