JOHOR BARU: Contrary to what some may believe, Tongkat Ali is not going to help anyone keep the A(H1N1) virus away.
In fact, multi-vitamins or Vitamin C can do more to boost the immune system, state health committee chairman Dr Robiah Kosai said.
She urged the people not to be duped by claims that Tongkat Ali, a traditional herb meant for men, was good to boost immunity against the virus.
Of late, street peddlers had cashed in on the flu scare by claiming that Tongkat Ali could keep one’s immune system strong.
“Anyway, Tongkat Ali is only supposed to help boost the male sex drive or manhood,” said Dr Robiah with a laugh.
She also urged private companies and non-governmental organisations to donate items such as hand sanitisers, thermometers and masks as the state government braces itself for the long haul fight against the pandemic.
The state government also need fans and mineral water to be placed at the 90-odd makeshift clinics set up in “hot spots” state-wide.
“These places are sometimes cramped with people who don’t get water or proper ventilation.
“The state government has its own allocation but with the help of the private sector, we can make things more comfortable,” Dr Robiah said, adding that the donations could be sent to the district health offices.
She said that to date, there were 20 deaths state-wide with seven people in intensive care units.
“Most of the cases were detected in Johor Baru, Batu Pahat and Kluang,” she said, reminding people to stay at home and rest if they have a fever or cold.
