PETALING JAYA: Local authorities have forwarded more than 1,000 phone numbers displayed on illegal advertisements to the Malaysian Multimedia and Communication Commission for disconnection.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry in a statement Wednesday said district and municipal councils had collected 1,705 phone numbers from illegal advertisements which had been stuck on lamp posts, telephone booths and other public places.

It said that action was taken based on the Money Lenders Act and advertisement as well as vandalism by-laws.

The statement said the commission was also helping local authorities identify the people who stuck up illegal advertisements by providing them with the name, address and other details of the phone number.

The ministry also urged members of the public to co-operate by providing the particulars of the phone numbers to the authorities and the commission.
