NILAI: Four men, believed to be Indonesians, were killed in a shootout with police at a quarry in Labu near here early yesterday.

The four, somewhere in their late 20s or early 30s, and believed to be behind several robberies near here over the past month were shot after they opened fire at policemen on patrol duty.

State police chief SAC I Datuk Osman Salleh said all four were killed on the spot.

“My officers spotted the suspicious-looking men in a white Proton Wira aeroback at about 5am near the Gadong-Labu junction and ordered the driver to stop.

“Initially, the driver stopped but then sped off when my officer asked him to produce identity documents,” he said.

Osman said the policemen gave chase and called in colleagues who were doing their rounds in Nilai.

After a six kilometre chase, the suspects drove onto a dirt road leading to the quarry.

However, their car crashed into a wall just before entering a tunnel leading to the quarry.

“When they got out of the car, one of the men fired two shots at the policemen. His three friends who were armed with parang also charged at my men but were killed when my men opened fire,” he said.

Osman said police could not positively identify the suspects as they had no identity documents on them.

The car, with false registration plates, had been reported stolen at the Terminal 1 station on May 8.

He said police also had reasons to believe that the four were involved in a spate of robberies in Lukut and in Selangor.

On a separate matter, Osman said three men, one armed with a revolver, had robbed a bistro owner and six customers in Lukut early yesterday and escaped with about RM40,000 in cash and belongings.

“They entered the bistro at around 1am and fired a shot. The bullet hit a glass which shattered and injured a customer,” he said.

He said police had launched a manhunt for the trio who had driven up in a Perodua Viva.
