GUARDIAN commemorated its 42nd anniversary recently with a pledge to the Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO), World Vision Malaysia and the PRIDE Foundation.

At a press conference held at the WAO centre in Petaling Jaya, Guardian Malaysia CEO Loi Liang Tok handed over a mock cheque to WAO and said said the company was celebrating its four decades of success by making a pledge to contribute to worthy causes.

“The funds were raised through our anniversary charity bonanza which is held from mid-June to July every year,” Loi said.

“We believe in WAO and its efforts to help battered women and their children, so this is the least we could do,” Loi added.

During the charity bonanza, customers were invited to donate RM2 to receive an exclusive charity card, entitling them to 20% discount on 24 health and beauty brands.

“Also, customers got to enjoy big savings on the first weekend of June by buying Guardian’s Pack a Bag at RM10 only, filling the bag with as many items from the participating brands and enjoying 3% off the products packed.

WAO executive director Ivy Josiah was thankful that Guardian had helped out without the WAO having to worry about anything.

“They did not ask us to provide any sort of data or statistics on our work.

The RM100,000 will be channelled to the good work done by our social workers,” Ivy said.

WAO projects and admintration manager Annie Varghese said fund-raising was never easy as money was needed to keep the centres going each year.

“The running expenses are about RM900,000 annually.

“We started our relationship with Giant last year, where they let us place donation boxes in their 40 outlets and that managed to raise RM100,000.

“This year, we approached their holding company – GCH Retail – who were happy to help us out again,” Varghese said.

WAO was founded 27 years ago and was the first women’s group to open a shelter home for battered women.
