Girl rescues cousins from fiery death

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: It was high drama as a schoolgirl braved a raging fire in a flat to rescue her three young cousins on the 12th floor of the Kerinchi People’s Housing Project here.

Noramiliana Mohd Akmal, 18, was babysitting the cousins when the blaze broke out at the master bedroom at about 10am yesterday.

As the fire spread to the living room and kitchen, a fiery end seemed imminent for the teenager and the cousins – a six-year-old boy and his sisters, aged four and six months.

Unfazed by the danger, Noramiliana carried her cousins to safety.

The fire is believed to have been started by one of the children who was reportedly playing with a lighter.

Noramiliana said she was putting the infant to bed in a room when the four-year-old cousin rushed in, screaming that the master bedroom was on fire.

“My main aim was to rescue my cousins as the fire began to spread quickly to the living room and kitchen.

“Only after I managed to carry them to a safe place did I contact my uncle and aunt who were away at work,” she said, adding that neighbours formed a bucket brigade to help contain the blaze before the firemen arrived.

Firemen from the Pantai Fire and Rescue Department initially had trouble putting out the blaze due to lack of water at the building.

The department’s operations officer, Zulkifli Mokhtar, said they needed to pump water from the fire truck and managed to put out the blaze about 30 minutes later.

He said the fire destroyed the master bedroom and damaged part of the living room and kitchen.
