KEMAMAN: A man who was released from prison about two months ago was shot dead by police when he tried to mow down a policeman with a stolen car at the 135KM Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kuantan.

The dead man’s 22-year-old accomplice who was also in the car sustained a gunshot wound in the shoulder and was reported to be in stable condition at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan.

Seized from the car were several parang and knives. Police did not identify the dead man. The incident occurred at about 11.50pm on Sunday near a lemang stall at Kampung Geliga in Kijal.

State CID chief Asst Comm Mohd Fuazi Abduri said yesterday the ex-convict had seven criminal records, including for house break-ins and car thefts, while the accomplice was linked to several hold-ups.

Following a report that a Perodua MyVi stolen in Kuantan was spotted in Kampung Geliga, a police team went there and saw two men seated inside the car.

Despite repeated requests to alight from the car, the duo refused.

The ex-convict, who was in the driver’s seat, reversed the car and hit a parked motorcycle before driving it forward, almost hitting one of the policemen.
