JOHOR BARU: “She was taken away cruelly by criminals who prey on innocent people,” Tan Chia Guan said at the funeral of his 17-year-old daughter Tan Shu Fang, a straight-As student, who died following a snatch theft.

The 58-year-old security officer said he was shocked beyond words when he heard about the incident on Sept 17 that led to Shu Fang’s coma and eventual death on Sept 25.

“I am deeply saddened that my beloved daughter is not here anymore,” he said when met at the Ulu Tiram Christian Cemetery here yesterday.

In grief: Shu Fang’s parents Tan and Leong Akooi paying their last respects to their late daughter in Ulu Tiram Monday.

Tan said he hoped that the authorities would catch the culprits as soon as possible. “I want them to be punished for this despicable crime.

“These criminals robbed my daughter of a bright future and they robbed our family of our little girl,” he said.

Tan added that the police should increase security at Taman Ungku Tun Aminah to deter snatch thieves from striking again.

Meanwhile, Shu Fang’s mother Leong Akooi said her daughter would be with her forever in her heart and soul.

“I will never ever forget her as I love her so much,” she said, adding that she was still devastated by the loss of her daughter.

Shu Fang was laid to rest at the cemetery at about 10am here yesterday with more than 80 people in attendance.

A student of SMK Mutiara Rini 2, Shu Fang was walking with her mother to a bank near their house in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah when two men on a motorcycle snatched her handbag, causing both to fall and Shu Fang to be struck unconscious.
