Union: Don’t bar loan and tax defaulters from travel

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Airlines System Employees’ Union wants the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) to review the travel ban on income tax and study loan defaulters.

Union executive secretary Mustafar Maarof said the ban has created serious implications and confusion among its workers who travel abroad regularly.

“Almost 100% of our cabin crew have to travel abroad. If they are barred from travelling overseas, they might end up losing their job,” he saidin a statement yesterday.

Mustafar added that even though some had settled their loans or had started paying on an instalment basis, they were still barred from travelling overseas.

“The IRB must have clear guidelines on the maximum and minimum amount that needs to be settled while the PTPTN must come up with a new mechanism for the collection of study loans.

“There should also be a counter near immigration to handle such cases,” the statement said.
