Defence varsity looking for permanent campus

What say you on the issue below?

KUANTAN: The Pahang government is looking for a suitable site for the National Defence University Malaysia’s (UPNM) permanent campus in Kuantan.

Penor, currently used by the Royal Malaysian Air Force as its target area for bombing exercises, has been mentioned as a possible location, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

He added that the project was approved some time ago when Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was Defence Minister.

“He (Najib) told me that the university would be built in Pahang,” he said. “We have to be meticulous in our site search as all three branches of the armed forces - army, navy and air force - are involved, Adnan told reporters after closing a Chinese cultural and arts show in a shopping mall here on Sunday.

On Saturday, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said that Pahang would have its second university when the UPNM permanent campus had been built in Kuantan under the 10th Malaysia Plan.

Saifuddin said Kuantan was selected because it had the defence logistics required for the university.

Adnan said the most appropriate site would be one that fronted the sea, but such locations were limited in Kuantan as many had already been taken up by resorts and hotels.

UPNM has a temporary campus at the Sungai Besi Camp in Kuala Lumpur, with 1,500 students pursuing courses in engineering, science and technology as well as defence management studies.

The university aims to enrol 5,000 students for the new campus in Kuantan.
