Barisan Nasional’s candidate to be known today

PUTRAJAYA: The Barisan Nasional candidate for the Bagan Pinang by-election will be announced at 4.30pm today, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He will announce the name when he goes to Bagan Pinang.

“We have received more than one name for the by-election and it will be decided by today, so that I can announce it when I am there,” he told reporters after attending the Education Ministry’s Hari Raya open house.

When asked about resistance to certain candidates, Muhyiddin, who is Umno deputy president and Education Minister, said the party accepted all views with an open heart.

“It is usual for members of the party and other Barisan component parties to accept the decision made by the leadership,” he said.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said Umno should pick a candidate free of money politics.

Asked about Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon’s statement that the party had begun searching for potential candidates for the next general election, Muhyiddin said what was important was to hasten the transformation process in Barisan component parties.

If the Government did not do it now, the people would not be convinced of the efforts towards change, he added.

“Most importantly for me are the visible changes that have been brought about under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak,” he said.

Asked whether Umno would also search for potential candidates, he said it was too early to do so.

Among those who attended the open house were Najib and several Cabinet members, including Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed and Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Noh Omar.
