Terengganu Umno on the mend

What say you on the issue below?

MARANG: The rift in Terengganu Umno is healing as the groups involved are putting the interest of the party above self, said state liaison chairman Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

Although many thought that problems in the state Umno was beyond repair, the sincerity of the leaders involved in putting aside their personal interests helped to resolve the differences, added Hishammuddin, also the party vice-president.

“I remain steadfast in my faith that whatever problems can be overcome,” he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the committee and holding a gathering with state Umno leaders here yesterday.

Also present were Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said and Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Almost all the Umno assemblymen and MPs in Terengganu attended the gathering, including those who had been labelled “renegades“. The only assemblymen who did not attend were Datuk Rosol Wahid (Ajil), Mohd Zawawi Ismail (Kuala Berang) and Zakaria Abdullah (Paka).

The gathering was made all the more merrier as it was followed by an Aidilfitri celebration involving a crowd of over 10,000 at Marang’s waterfront.

Meanwhile, former Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the outcome was a clear sign that the state Umno was back on the right track.

Asked if Terengganu Umno’s problems were over, Idris said: “It’s not possible to solve everything in one go. It takes time.”

Leadership disputes arose in Terengganu Umno after the March 2008 general election with one faction openly showing its dissatisfaction over Ahmad’s appointment as Mentri Besar.

Following Umno’s general assembly earlier this year, Hishammuddin, who had won one of the vice-president’s posts, was appointed Terengganu Umno chief.
