PETALING JAYA: A robber found out the hard way that crime does not pay.

The man and his two accomplices had just stabbed a woman and taken her handbag and were making a getaway.

But as he was running across a highway, he was hit by a car and sent flying through the air.

To add salt to the injury, a mob pursuing the robber assaulted and pelted him with garbage bins as he lay moaning on the ground bleeding.

A police source said in the 9am incident on Sunday, the suspect and his two accomplices followed a woman as she was walking in Kampung Lindungan in Jalan Klang Lama here.

"The suspect, armed with a knife, threatened to harm the woman if she did not hand over her handbag.

"She refused and was slashed several times before the suspect ran off with her handbag.

"The woman screamed for help, and residents chased after him. The commotion also attracted the attention of a passing police patrol car.

"The three robbers ran towards the nearby Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong. Two of them escaped.

"The third, however, was not so lucky.

"He was hit by a car and landed in a heap several metres away.

"When the crowd caught up with the suspect, they kicked and assaulted him. Others took garbage bins and hit him."

Police arrived at the scene a short while later and rescued the man from further assault.

"He was sent to the University Malaya Medical Centre where his condition is said to be critical."
