Extend aid to non-Muslims, urges Rosmah

KUALA LUMPUR: The aid given to the disabled, single mothers and the poor during Ramadan should be extended to non-Muslims under the 1Malaysia concept, said Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

“Blessings are bestowed not only on Muslims during Ramadan but also on every Malaysian, regardless of race, religion and ethnicity,” she said, adding that she hoped the tradition of giving to the needy would enable the young to learn about the importance of unity, which cut across race, religion and culture.

“The togetherness of all levels of Malaysian society in observing Ramadan will not have come about without the sincerity, tolerance and mutual respect for the cultural and religious differences of the various races,” she said after presenting Aidilfitri goodies in an event jointly organised by the Cheras Education Foundation and Cheras Umno here yesterday.

Rosmah, who is the Prime Minister’s wife, said Malaysians should highlight the common values they shared, rather than the differences which would only destroy the future of the country.

She also called on the corporate sector and non-governmental organisations to emulate the tradition of distributing duit raya in accordance with the 1Malaysia concept.

Rosmah gave away RM300 each and goodies to 300 disabled persons, single mothers and poor folk from Cheras, including 42 Indians and 50 Chinese.

Cheras Umno Division chief Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee said this was the first time since 1994 that aid had also been given to non-Muslims.
