End to flood problems before Hari Raya

What say you on the issue below?

THE residents of Pangsapuri DBKL Gombak Phase 2 will see their flood woes resolved before the Hari Raya celebrations.

Over 500 residents from Block C have been facing flood problems for 19 years now.

Residents have been laying the blame on the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) all these time but they recently found out that the problem lies with the Drainage and Irrigation Department.

The monsoon drain near the apartments reportedly is not deep enough to hold water, especially during rainy seasons.

Finally, they lodged a complaint with the Public Complaints Bureau headed by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Senator Datuk T. Murugiah.

“After meeting with the relevant departments, Jabatan Saliran has given two alternatives - a short-term plan and a long-term plan - for me to choose,” said Murugiah.

The short plan is to fix the monsoon drain for RM65,000 and erect fencing around the drain costing RM60,000.

The long-term plan would cost RM3mil to modify the monsoon drain and Murugiah has decided against this.

Murugiah said he ordered the work on the monsoon drain to begin as soon as possible and it should be completed before Hari Raya.

“Most of the residents are Muslims and will be looking forward to the celebrations and we do not want the floods to recur,” he added.

He has also asked the DBKL to submit a report on unpaid claims from the insurance bought by residents from the DBKL.

Also, residents were recently asked to pay maintenance fees that had not been paid for 19 years.

The residents had refused to pay the fees owed because of the flood problems that they were facing.

A third meeting is scheduled to be held next week to resolve the issue between all departments and the residents.

He said this during a press conference held at the Public Complaints Bureau meeting session on Sept 8.

Murugiah also met the board of directors of Telekom Malaysia after receiving a memorandum from 400 Indian contractors.

The memorandum states that the contractors do not get contracts from Telekom anymore and that sub-contractors were not being paid properly.
