KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk S.K. Devamany is confident of securing a vice-president’s post in the MIC polls this Saturday as a belated birthday present.
“I am not saying this in arrogance, but I have worked very hard for the last five years as an MP and party treasurer.
“We have produced results which we can talk about to the delegates,” said the two-time Cameron Highlands MP who is also Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department.
He said his confidence was based on feedback on the ground after meeting 90% of the delegates.
This is the first time that Devamany, who turns 52 today, is contesting for a national post in the party. He has been endorsed for one of the three vice-presidents’ posts by party president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
Devamany joined the MIC in 1990, became the state youth leader five years later, and was made an Ipoh city councillor in 2000.
In 2004, he contested and won the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat and retained it again last year. Devamany was then appointed deputy minister.
The party, he said, had entrusted him with the task of ensuring and monitoring the successful implementation of projects for the community in the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
On claims that MIC was irrelevant, Devamany said the party had represented Indians in the Government for the last 52 years and had always fought for the rights of the community.
